Profession of Faith

03-03-2019Why do we do that?

During the profession of faith, we declare that Jesus came down from heaven “And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.”This belief of ours is rooted in the scripture. It came from the annunciation when Angel Gabriel told Mary that she would have a son (See Luke 1:3038). We believe that Jesus is truly human because he has a real human nature formed in the womb of his mother Mary, including a human body and human soul. We believe he is truly God because he has also a divine nature. Jesus has no earthly father but was miraculously conceived by God’s power. This is what we profess when we call Mary the Mother of God.

Jesus is truly God. He is also fully human. Jesus did not just “go through the motions” as a human being. The Bible tells us Jesus had to grow and learn just as we do. He celebrated life, and even got in trouble for it. Jesus liked people and people liked him. He was courageous, yet he knew fear. He was born like us and experienced death as we will.

In the same profession of faith, we admit that “For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried…” By this, we areadmitting that God’s love is the only power capable of overcoming sin. We are professing our faith that Jesus loves us and that he is inviting us to be united with him so that we can turn away from our old self of sin and rise to a new life. God’s love for us is unquantifiable. He allowed Jesus to die so as to give meaning to our lives. We were nobody but Jesus’ death on the cross has made us somebody. We had no value but Jesus' death on the cross has made usinvaluable. We were not worthy of love but Jesus’s death on the cross has made us loveable.

What do Jesus humanity and his death on the cross mean to you?
