One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic

03-17-2019Why do we do that?

Another article of faith we Catholics profess in the Nicene Creed is: “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic church.”

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the love eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is the reason we are alive, the cause of all that is good in the world. To locate the Holy Spirit, we need only look for that which is good, true, beautiful, and honorable in creation, in ourselves, and in others.

We believe that the Church is one. This does not mean that other churches have no relationship to Christ, only that Christ wants all his followers to be united in him (see John 17:21).

We believe that the Church is holy. This does not mean that we are sinless, but that we share in the holiness of God through baptism and are called to reject sin and live in union with Christ.

We believe that the Church is catholic. This word means universal, or whole, and refers to Christ’s Church throughout the world.

We also believe that the Church is apostolic. This means that the Church traces its authority and teaching back to Jesus through the apostles whom Jesus commissioned to preach. The Church is apostolic as well in the sense that an apostle is “one who is sent,” and so the whole Church is sent to preach the gospel to the world.

Where do you see the Holy Spirit at work?
