Unpacking Our Faith: Why Do We Celebrate Mass? Discovering Its Power and Purpose (Week 2)
by Rev. Emmanuel I. Ihemedu | 11/24/2024 | Live the LiturgyAfter the Sign of the Cross, the priest proclaims, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ… be with you all,” to which we respond, “And with your spirit.” These words announce the presence of Christ among us, as promised in Scripture: “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20). Recognizing Christ in our midst invites us to reflect deeply on our relationship with Him, acknowledging the moments we have not lived in His light.
In a moment of silent reflection, we bring to mind our need for God’s mercy and forgiveness. Like the prodigal son, we come before our loving Father, admitting where we have strayed and trusting in His embrace of love and grace.
Next, we sing the Gloria, a powerful hymn of praise that echoes the song of the angels at Christ’s birth (Luke 2:13-14). As we join our voices with the priest in this ancient prayer, we open our hearts in wonder at God’s love. Together, we praise the Father for His incredible works, joining our voices with all of heaven.
Then, as the priest says, “Let us pray,” he pauses, allowing each of us to silently place our own intentions before God. The priest then gathers these prayers and presents them on our behalf to the Father.
May this understanding enrich your experience of Mass and deepen your connection to the divine presence, Amen!
