Social Justice Ministry
Caring for the poor, the hungry and the homeless
The St. John Paul the Great Social Justice Ministry Committee’s mission is to
- provide for the needs of the poor, the hungry and the homeless in Torrington,
- educate parishioners about the Scriptural call to all of us to reach out to those in need and
- promote parish participation in Ministry activities.
Over the years, in our monthly food drives, we have collected and distributed many hundreds of pounds of non-perishable foods along with monetary donations to area food banks through Stock the Shelves serving northwest Connecticut.
We support Two Hearts Pregnancy Care Center through our “Mother’s Day Baby Shower” in addition to sponsoring a baby supplies collection during the month of October for “Respect Life Month.”
Our “Christmas in July” toy drives for FISH and Friendly Hands provide those organizations with a head-start for the holiday season.
Each year, we organize “Christmas Giving Trees” with assistance from the parish youth ministry and collect hundreds of gifts for FISH, Friendly Hands, Two Hearts, and home-bound parishioners.
